ASNY Student Prizes
ASNY encourages student participation at our meetings and we are proud to support early career astronomers. Historically, ASNY has funded prizes for the best research paper submitted (at both the undergraduate and graduate student level). Students awarded the prize would then give an invited talk at the next ASNY science meeting. For a variety of reasons, we have experimented with a presentation prize model in recent years and we continue to consider the best mechanism to support student participation. The 2025 prizes were awarded for best poster presentation at the meeting.
If we return to considering paper submissions, the general details are below:
Graduate Student Prize
This is awarded each year for the best research paper on some aspect of research in astronomy submitted to the Prize Committee. The submitted materials are quite often derived from the dissertation of the student, but they can be from any original research. In the case of work done in collaboration with a faculty member, that faculty member should write a letter to the Committee in which their participation and that of the student are clearly detailed. The Prize winner receives a check for $500 when the Prize lecture is delivered.
Undergraduate Student Prize
This is awarded each year for the best research paper on some aspect of research in astronomy submitted to the Prize Committee. The materials submitted can be from any original research done by the student. In the case of work done in collaboration with a faculty member, that faculty member should write a letter to the committee in which their participation and that of the student are clearly detailed. The student’s faculty advisor should write a letter in support of the project to the Prize Committee. The Prize winner receives a check for $500 when the Prize lecture is delivered.
